The 10 largest countries in the world

Do you know the giant countries of our planet? We have looked at the 10 largest countries in the world for you!

If you were asked about the largest countries in the world, what would you think of? The USA maybe, Russia or China, it’s going to be more difficult for the rest, isn’t it? Here we have the ten largest countries in the world in a countdown!

10th place: Algeria

Starting off our top 10 largest countries is Africa’s largest country, Algeria. The state in the Sahara reflects everything that one imagines from the African desert areas: oriental-looking cities made of white stone, spacious, deserted steppes and palm-studded oases. The coastal areas in the north, for example around the capital Algiers, also offer beautiful sandy beaches and insights into the local way of life. And now honestly: who would have known that Algeria is in the top 10?

9th place: Kazakhstan

Let’s come to the 9th largest country in the world. Located between the Caspian Sea to the west and the Altai Mountains to the east, Kazakhstan is shaped by the numerous cultures and peoples who have settled here over the centuries. Ancient petroglyphs (rock paintings) can be viewed at sites such as the World Heritage site of Tamgaly, while the mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi in Turkestan is dedicated to the Islamic mystic of the same name. In idyllic places like the national park near Qarqaraly or Kaindysees you can relax in the untouched nature and enjoy the sight of the diverse fauna and flora. The capital Astana, on the other hand, offers imposing and futuristic-looking buildings that are waiting to be discovered.

8th place: Argentina

After Brazil, Argentina is the largest country in South America and trumps above all with its diverse natural landscapes. On the one hand there is the Talampaya National Park, which inspires with wonderful desert landscapes as well as unique sandstone formations and extensive gorges. In contrast, in Los Glaciares National Park you can admire the complete opposite of desert, namely incomparable glacier formations. Animal lovers should head to the Valdez Peninsula, known for its colonies of sea lions and elephant seals. You should definitely see the legendary cave Cueva de las Manos, which presents cave paintings – above all the handprints that give it its name – from around 7000 to 1000 BC.

7th place: India

Not only is India one of the largest countries in the world, but it is also home to some of the largest cities in the world: Delhi and Mumbai. From dreamy beaches and idyllic natural landscapes to magnificent temples and exuberant celebrations such as the annual Holi festival of colors – India’s 5000-year-old culture inspires with its traditional and modern culture and has just the right thing ready for every holidaymaker’s taste. In the famous Taj Mahal you can admire the unique architecture, while in Varanasi you can see one of the oldest settlements in the world. In the urban centers, meanwhile, one enjoys delicious Indian cuisine or treats oneself to soothing Ayurvedic spa treatments.

6th place: Australia

Exotic animals, almost infinitely wide, adventurous landscapes, but also lively cities like Sydney or Melbourne await visitors in Australia, ranked 6th among the largest countries in the world. In the country’s nature reserves, you can get close to kangaroos, rare birds and koalas while you relax on the beach sunbathing or instead burn out in the refreshing waters surfing the waves. You can get a good portion of culture in the urban centers by visiting the many museums or an evening in the famous Sydney Opera House. Finally, for a pinch of mysticism, head to the sacred sites of the indigenous Aborigines, such as the well-known mountain Ayers Rock or the Baiame Cave in Milbrodale.

5th place: Brazil

A stay in sunny Brazil promises pure temperament. The largest country in South America not only inspires thousands of tourists every year during its world-famous carnival in Rio de Janeiro, but also skilfully lets its southern charm play out in the remaining months. On trips to the Amazon and other fascinating natural landscapes, you can observe the exotic fauna and flora of Brazil or enjoy the unique sight of majestic waterfalls, water-rich deserts and idyllic coastal areas. To celebrate, head to the country’s metropolises, where the hospitable locals will be happy to dance and chat with you until the early hours of the morning.

4th place: China

From the Great Wall of China to the Forbidden City in Beijing to the Terracotta Warriors in Xian, many impressive places in China await you. So it’s hard to believe that massive China only makes it to the 4th largest country in the world! The numerous temples, pagodas and palaces in the country also give a deeper insight into the history, culture and religious tradition of the Middle Kingdom and impress not only with their extensive past, but also with their unique architecture. The colorful hustle and bustle in the big cities of China, above all Shanghai and Hong Kong, lets the country shine in a completely different light and brings guests closer to the modern way of life of today’s inhabitants.

3rd place: United States

The land of unlimited opportunities also has exactly this ready for vacationers – from fairytale forest landscapes in Maine to the unique rocky deserts along the Grand Canyon to the big city hustle and bustle in metropolises like New York or Los Angeles, everything is offered to you here. If you want to experience the American dream up close, you can rent a car and roar along the famous Route 66 or learn about the history of the founding fathers and their descendants in the countless museums and cultural sites in the USA. Adrenaline junkies, meanwhile, take advantage of the country’s vast array of extreme sports, or stay on the safe side of thrills at one of the many amusement parks. However, the USA is not the largest country in North America, but is topped by its northern neighbor…

2nd place: Canada

Untouched natural landscapes and endless freedom – that’s what idyllic Canada, which ranks second among the largest countries in the world, promises. Anyone who has always wanted to go on a survival adventure into the wilderness has come to the right place and can camp for a few days between rushing waterfalls and wild animals. It is quieter, but at least as beautiful in the country’s cities. Accordingly, you will experience the friendly nature of the locals in urban centers such as Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver and let yourself be instructed and inspired by the rich cultural offerings. Relaxed hours await on the coasts with walks with a wonderful view over the unruly waves and – with a bit of luck – on gentle sea giants.

1st place: Russia

Nastrovye! The – by far – largest country on earth is also one of the most complex: While you can familiarize yourself with the rich history and well-established culture of the Russians in metropolises such as Moscow or Saint Petersburg, fascinatingly beautiful ones await in other parts of the extensive area , untouched natural landscapes, from steppe areas to snow-capped mountain ridges to the deciduous forests of the taiga. In any case, you should visit the numerous historically significant and architecturally impressive buildings in the country, such as St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow or the Catherine Palace in Saint Petersburg.
