History of Iztuzu Beach

In ancient times there was no Iztuzu or any other stretch of beach. Kaunos, which is now 4 kilometers inland from Iztuzu, was also a port city at that time. The reason for the formation of Iztuzu Beach and the blocking of the port of Kaunos is that the Dalaman Stream flowed from Ortaca and Dalyan in ancient times. Today, most of Ortaca and the lower part of Dalyan’s Arıkbaşı District are completely filled with sand and pebbles carried by the Dalaman Stream.

In 226 or 227 BC there was a great Rhodes earthquake and the Southwestern parts of Anatolia were also leveled. As a result of this earthquake, the bed of Dalaman Stream changed and created the miracle of Iztuzu. When there was no Dalaman Stream, the sands drifted in the opposite direction this time and the waves started to drag the sands to the shore. Since the rocks in front of Iztuzu Beach reduced the speed of the waves, the sands accumulated in its current place. The fine golden yellow sands accumulated over time and formed a large area, which has now become a home for the eggs of Caretta Carettas. The side you set foot on the beach is fresh water. The vast sea in front of you is the salty Mediterranean! You can swim in salt water or unsalted water if you want.
