New model: Lexus brings fifth RX generation

Lexus is preparing to launch the new RX. The modified model and two other hybrid variants will come onto the market at the turn of the year.

The fifth generation of the brand’s best-selling model, the RX, is scheduled to go on sale at the turn of the year, according to the Toyota subsidiary. Because Lexus has not yet named a price, only the almost 65,000 euros that are due for the current model at least remain as a guide.

The RX is a little sleeker, wider and, despite the unchanged length of 4.89 meters, offers a little more space in the interior. This is ensured by the wheelbase that has been stretched by six centimeters and the optimized seating with thinner seats and more legroom.

The trunk is also more usable with a three centimeter lower loading sill and a five centimeter longer loading floor, Lexus explains.

Always with all-wheel drive

Almost 100 kilograms lighter than before and with a lower cd value, the RX, which is always equipped with all-wheel drive, should also be more economical. For this, Lexus in Germany is using a plug-in hybrid for the first time in the series.

This RX 450h+ is based on a 2.5 liter four-cylinder and has a system output of 225 kW/306 hp. Its battery has a capacity of 18.1 kWh and should enable around 65 kilometers of electric driving. According to Lexus, this reduces consumption to 1.2 liters (CO2 emissions to 26g/km).

Two more hybrids on offer

In addition, the Japanese offer two conventional hybrid variants: In the RX350h with the same 2.5 liter, the system output is then 180 kW/245 hp and the new RX500h comes as a sporty top model with a supercharged 2.4 liter including an e-module to 273 kW/371 hp.

As the only variant, he does not use a continuously variable CVT transmission, but a six-speed automatic, which should enable the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in about 6.0 seconds.
