Spring on Bornholm: time for two on the sunny island

Bornholm is an old kingdom and the Danes are always happy to share their island with their guests.

But if you want to get to know the island in its most beautiful form, come between Easter and Midsummer’s Eve – whether alone, as a couple or with the whole family.

From April the mythical time of exploding colors begins. The fresh green of nature corresponds to the radiant blue of the wide sky and the Baltic Sea, which lets its gentle waves slosh onto the snow-white beaches. The forest floor is covered with anemones of various colors and the spring flowers on the meadows and in the well-kept gardens greet the warming sun and you breathe deeply this fresh, clear air. Then you know again: life is beautiful! By the way, did you know that Bornholm has as many hours of sunshine in spring as the Italian Rivera? It’s just that it’s much quieter and much more relaxed here. That’s why real Bornholm fans like to come between Easter and Midsummer’s Eve, when the small towns and idyllic villages still belong to around 40,000 Bornholmers, as well as the early holiday guests who appreciate the mild climate, the unique nature, the wide, white beaches and the many cultural attractions.

Magnificent nature: Feel like in the film

From “Pirates of the Caribbean” to “Lord of the Rings” – it’s not for nothing that you often get the impression of vacationing in a film landscape. For example, when you stroll along the snow-white, eight-kilometer-long beach of Dueodde in southern Bornholm, you feel like a Caribbean pirate. In the north of the island, Svartingedalen takes you into the world of the Lord of the Rings. There you will even find a giant ball (Jættebolden), which a Swedish giant once wanted to throw at a church, and near Stammershalle lies an enchanted troll forest, which supposedly only the really brave visitors dare to enter. The almost untouched forest of Almindingen beams you into the scenery of Jurassic Park, except that no dinosaurs graze here, but a herd of real bison. You have finally arrived in the fantasy film at the famous Bornholm wobbly stones, which were not laid here by a giant, but by the ice age. You can actually make them wobble without much effort. And if you want to experience Star Wars scenes, visit the lunar landscape on the coast at Kultippen and feel like a Jedi Knight. If you want to relax, you can discover the idyllic little villages or picturesque fishing villages. Do you think you are in a fairy tale? It’s you!

Good on foot: The island of hikers

The most beautiful means of transport on Bornholm are hiking boots. With them you will not only discover magnificent natural scenery on well-developed forest, beach and cliff hiking trails, but also the many idyllic villages and small towns of your sunny island. No wonder that the German TREKKING magazine chose Bornholm as the second best hiking region in Europe in 2021, just behind Gran Canaria and ahead of Iceland. Of course, you get the best overview if you circle the island on the coastal hiking trail. But watch out: the route on the old rescue route is a good 120 kilometers long. Most hikers divide it into several stages and repeatedly make detours into the interior of the island. For example, with a hike along the rivers Kobbe Å or Døndale Å. The special feature: Both rivers end in a waterfall. There are 13 of them on Bornholm, and the Døndale waterfall is the highest in Denmark at 20 meters. Of course, you can also simply hike across the island: The High Heath Trail (Højlyngsstien) leads 67 kilometers from Sandvig through wild nature past many sights to Årsdale Mill. You are completely alone and in the middle of nature, because especially in spring you will hardly meet anyone. A tip: Download the app “Hikes on Bornholm” for your next hiking holiday.

Always on the move: the sporty sunny island

Bornholm with its almost 600 km2 is a huge sports ground for all kinds of activities. With your bike, you pedal along well-developed cycle paths that stretch across the entire island in a dense network. But you can also be sportier and measure your strength with nature on a mountain bike. With great routes, Bornholm has developed into an El Dorado for mountain bikers. But you can also make good progress without two wheels, because Bornholm is a paradise for runners. Short haul, long haul or even cross country – everything runs on the island. The marathon “Etape” Bornholm, in which the runners circumnavigate the island in five days, has become famous. It’s a bit more comfortable on the well-tended lawn: in three golf clubs, friends of the tee-off will find ideal opportunities for extensive golfing. Of course, water sports offer even more space for activities such as kiting, surfing, sailing or kayaking around the island. Divers will find a relatively intact underwater world and especially for anglers, Bornholm is a real paradise, especially in autumn.

World culture island: packed with history, art and culture

Northern European history is concentrated in a small area on Bornholm and a unique culture has developed as if under a magnifying glass. The first Ice Age hunters reached Bornholm as early as 8,000 BC, then came the Vikings, the Danes, the Swedes, the Lübeck Hanseatic League and finally the Danes again. They all left traces and a rich heritage that you can admire today in numerous museums, excavation sites and ruins. Check out the 3,500-year-old rock carvings on Madsebakke, the prehistoric monuments and the sad story of Leonora Christina, daughter of King Christian IV of Denmark, who died in the famous fortress in 1660 after Bornholm was liberated from the Swedes for treason Hammershus was imprisoned. The 700-year-old castle has lost its terror today and is a tourist magnet as the largest connected castle ruins in Northern Europe. But the present can also offer a lot of art and culture: everywhere on Bornholm you will stumble across studios and workshops where artists create traditional ceramics or modern art. The island is now so famous for its art galleries, artist workshops and studios that in 2017 the whole island was named the first world craft region in Europe by the World Craft Council.

From herring to a Michelin star: Bornholm goes through the stomach

“As a gourmet and connoisseur, you enjoy the sunny island like, well, “God on Bornholm”. A freshly smoked herring on the bench in front of one of Bornholm’s traditional smokehouses tastes just as good as a gourmet dinner in the two-star restaurant kadeau. The reason for this? Look around: It blooms and grows everywhere. The fertile soil and the Baltic Sea offer the best conditions for the excellent products of the good Bornholm cuisine – everything comes from the region or fresh from the sea. You can find vegetables, meat, milk, cheese and bread in the supermarkets and in the numerous small farm shops on the island. A visit to the market hall in Rønne’s old slaughterhouse is also a real gourmet experience. This goes best with the excellent Bornholm beers or harder stuff: several small distilleries on the island distil aquavit, rum and even whiskey. And: there is real Bornholm wine that even tastes good – from Vingården Lille Gadegård, today one of Denmark’s largest wineries. Those who prefer to be pampered can visit one of the many good restaurants and cafés. Especially in spring it smells delicious from their kitchens and it’s time for a fresh gourmet adventure on your favorite island.

Getting here: It’s easy to arrive

Although Bornholm is an island, transport connections by sea and air are well developed. From Germany you can be on the sunny island in a maximum of three hours and twenty minutes. The daily ferry connection from Sassnitz/Mukran on the island of Rügen to Rønne, the main town on the island, is a mini cruise that appropriately heralds your island experience. The car, mobile home or caravan simply drives with you.
