These are the worst airports in the world

The German air passenger rights portal Airhelp annually ranks the best and worst airports in the world, based on various criteria such as punctuality, service quality and the range of food and shops.

According to Airhelp, the worst airport in the world is the international commercial airport in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon. Humberto Delgado Airport, which handled almost 60 million passengers a year before the Corona pandemic, landed at the top of the current list of the passenger rights portal.

How are the worst airports in the world determined?

The so-called “Airhelp Score” was first published in 2015 and has been updated annually since then. The airports are rated on a 10-point scale based on three criteria. Punctuality measures how punctual departures and arrivals are and accounts for 60 percent of an airport’s overall rating. The service quality contributes another 20 percent to the rating. It is based on surveys of thousands of passengers. The survey participants rate the quality of customer service, waiting times at security checkpoints and the cleanliness of the airport. The last 20 percent of the rating goes to the food and shops at the airports. This data is also based on the ratings given by the passengers.

In its methodology, Airhelp explains that it excludes airports for which it “cannot obtain data”. In addition, the ranking only includes the “best-known and busiest airports in the world.”

The 10 worst airports in the world

Lisbon Airport performed poorly in terms of punctuality in particular, scoring only 4.7 out of a possible 10 points. The airport still achieved 7.3 points for service quality and 7.4 points for food and shops. Since punctuality is weighted higher, it was only enough for the last place in the ranking. Striking: 8 of the 10 worst airports in the world are in Europe. With Porto there is even a second airport in Portugal in the top ten.
