TÜV report: How reliable is the BMW X4 as a used vehicle?

The X6 initially irritated before the success of the large SUV coupé set in. BMW promptly copied the concept of the jacked-up hatchback model in a smaller series with the X4. By 2018, the first generation of the SUV coupe was built.

During the main inspection (HU) there is a lot of light – but also shadows.

•Model history: BMW launched the X4, derived from the compact SUV X3, in 2014. The manufacturer didn’t give the model a facelift, but it did give it a decent performance boost in 2016: the so-called M Performance model X4 M40i came out. In 2018, the second generation, which is not considered here, rolled into the sales rooms.

•Dimensions (according to ADAC): 4.67 m x 1.88 m x 1.62 m (LxWxH), trunk volume: 500 l to 1400 l.

• Body styles: The X4 is a four-door SUV coupe. There are no variants, but the sister model X3 as a compact SUV with better space in the rear seats.

•Strengths:Neither the axles, nor the taillights, nor most of the brake components stand out negatively in the HU, in some cases they even come off as exemplary. According to the “Auto Bild Tüv Report 2022”, rust on the chassis is never a problem. The brake lines are almost flawless, the exhaust systems prove to be very durable on the test bench.

•Weaknesses: A few complaints come together. Worn tie rod ends are a typical problem, springs and dampers weaken at the second HU, and increased oil loss is diagnosed. At the third check, there are also high complaint rates for the indicators. The fact that the X4 passes the emissions test (AU) is not a matter of course.

•Breakdown behavior: Looking at its breakdown statistics, ADAC writes: “The BMX X4 has done very well in all years.” The car club does not report any priorities.

•Engines:petrol (four and six cylinders in line, all-wheel drive): 135 kW/184 hp to 265 kW/360 hp; Diesel (four and six-cylinder in line, all-wheel drive): 140 kW/190 hp to 230 kW/313 hp.

• Market prices (according to “DAT Marktspiegel” from Deutsche Automobil Treuhand with statistically expected kilometers):

– X4 xDrive 20i (2015); 135 kW/184 hp (four-cylinder); 96,000 kilometers; 22,350 euros.

– X4 xDrive 20d M Sport (2016); 140 kW/190 hp (four-cylinder); 102,000 kilometers; 25 600 euros.

– X4 M40i (2017); 265 kW/360 hp (six-cylinder); 71,000 kilometers; 37,150 euros.
