The best travel time for Sri Lanka: How to avoid the rainy season

Good mood when traveling and bad weather just don’t go together – that’s why we’ll tell you how to minimize the rain in Sri Lanka for maximum holiday fun!

Sri Lanka off the south coast of India not only fascinates with fantastically beautiful beaches and bright blue water, but also with deep green natural landscapes and mysterious temples. So that you can enjoy your vacation on the fascinating island to the fullest, we will tell you when and where exactly the rainy season is and how you can best avoid it.

A country with two rainy seasons

When we say we tell you how to avoid Sri Lanka’s rainy season, we should really say we tell you how to avoid Sri Lanka’s rainy season – there are two of them on the beautiful island.

Like many countries in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is also ruled by two monsoons: the south-west monsoon, which brings rain to the island from May to August, and the north-east monsoon, which brings rain between October and January. Both rainy seasons are particularly felt on the windward cardinal points of the country, while they have far less influence on the weather on the leeward side. However, it should be borne in mind that short but frequent rain showers are to be expected throughout the year, especially in the south-west of Sri Lanka. It’s never really dry; driest, however, in the north-east during the summer months.

In summary, this means that a holiday in the north, east or north-east of Sri Lanka is particularly suitable during the summer months, while you should consider a holiday in the south, west or south-west especially in winter. At the same time, however, you should be aware that an (almost) rain-free holiday in Sri Lanka is hardly possible.
